Below are the workshops being offered this summer that are specifically designed for K-5 or K-8 teachers. July 30, 2009 No Lab—No Problem SCNF1005 CRN45165 Workshop participants will learn how to use a thematic approach to assist their students in the learning process. All experiments will emphasize safety, wise use of resources, and a hands-on investigative approach. Experiments will concentrate on investigation techniques that stress TAKS objective 3 using chemicals and supplies that are safe for young children and do not require a laboratory setting. TEKS: 3.6 A, 4.6 A, 5.5A and B, 5.7A-D, and 5.8A-D 8:30am – 3:30pm Genecov Science Bld 223 Cost: $69
Elementary 4th and 5th grades and Integrated Middle School Science July 10 and 11, 2009 The Outdoor Classroom SCIT2024 CRN45170 This workshop is designed to help participants better understand what goes into the planning and implementing of an outdoor classroom. Topics will include an overview of suggested designs found in the Texas Science Facilities Manual, a field trip to a working outdoor classroom, and some hands on experiments that can be used in the early stages of getting and outdoor classroom started. This workshop is specifically designed for teachers K-8 interested in utilizing the outdoor classroom for science instruction. . Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably. Some activities will be done outside (sunscreen recommended); field trip will require some walking dress appropriately. Please advise SCRMCC if you will require any special assistance in order to participate. On July 10 bus will leave the North Genecov Science Building parking lot at 8:00am. 8:00am - 3:30pm Genecov Science Bld 223 Cost: $149.00 June 26 2009 TJC Astronomy Workshop for Teachers K-8 SCIT2028 CRN451171 The Astronomy Workshop for Teachers K-8 will take place at Hudnall Planetarium on the Tyler Junior College main campus. The workshop will consist of a one-day session involving TEKS-aligned, inquiry-based activities designed to teach astronomy concepts. Emphasis will be on practical exercises, activities, demonstrations and resources that educators can incorporate directly into their classrooms. Topics Covered will include: Patterns & Cycles in the Nighttime Sky, Earth’s Seasons, Characteristics of the Sun, The Moon & Lunar Cycle, The Solar System. 8:30am – 3:30pm Hudnall Planetarium Cost: $69
