"Water is Cool"

A hands-on environmental workshop designed to train teachers in how to implement an environmental studies component in their classroom. Participants will learn how to use the outdoors as a classroom, perform water quality tests, evaluate the quality of water, conduct hands-on experiments, and apply field work activities to their specific math, science and social studies curriculum.

Presented by Larry Chambers, Instructor for Tyler ISD and former instructor of environmental studies at Camp Tyler. (This is a two day workshop)

 

Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Understand the importance of laboratory safety and waste reduction in today's society.
  2. Be familiar with the Texas Education Agency guidelines for field trip safety.
  3. Be able to identify potential outdoor classroom sites in their area.
  4. Be able to use equipment appropriate for elementary students to test water quality.
  5. Be able to evaluate the quality of water.
  6. Be able to conduct hands-on experiments that study the importance of water in various systems.
  7. Be able to integrate the environmental science lessons with other subjects such as English, math and social studies.
  8. Have developed the skill and printed resource materials to apply objectives 1-7 in classroom instruction.
