"Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Waste Recovery"

Registration Code: SCIT2014  408054Q

TEKS Oriented----TEEAC Approved---- CE qualified-----G/T qualified by some Region ESC

Attendance is limited to 20 so be sure to register early.

PROGRAM

Topics will include an overview of the TEA laboratory and stockroom safety recommendations for chemical use and storage, EPA and other regulations, Health and Safety Plans, differentiating hazardous chemicals from environmentally safe chemicals, recovery and storage techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring questions and be prepared their school's or organizations needs in this area.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Understand the importance of laboratory safety and waste reduction in today's society.
  2. Be familiar with Texas Education Agency guidelines for laboratory and stockroom chemical use and storage.
  3. Be able to recognize Acronyms for major environmental laws or regulatory standards.
  4. Be able to differentiate between hazardous and environmentally "green" chemicals.
  5. Be able to differentiate between recovered chemicals and hazardous waste regulations.
  6. Be able to make safe judgments concerning chemical storage.
  7. Be able to apply recovery techniques to their laboratory situation.
  8. Understand how collaboration can reduce waste and costs.
  9. Know that environmental regulations apply to every education facility.
  10. Have developed the skill and printed resource materials to apply objectives 1-9 in the laboratory and stockroom.

8:30-8:45AM

Arrival, Registration and "Get Acquainted" Genecov Science Building Rm G202. Participants will be asked to submit particular safety issues of concern to them. These will be compiled and addressed during the day without reference to a particular program or school.

8:45-9:00AM

Seminar: "What is the South Central Regional Microscale Chemistry Center how can it benefit your program?" Dr. Byron Howell, Coordinator SCRMCC

9:00-9:30AM

"Safety First: An overview of fundamental laboratory safety practices" The Texas Safety Standards, Material Safety Data Sheets, and American Chemical Society recommendations will serve as reference material.

9:30-10:30AM

"Cleaning up your act"  Presentation will include PowerPoint presentation of different types of laboratory safety violations.

10:30-11:00

"What it Means to be Environmentally Green" Making your program environmentally green means fewer leftovers, less cost, and safer work areas without sacrificing program quality and in most cases making it better. Also will include opportunity for participants to ask questions particular to their school situation.

11:00-11:30

"The Letters of the Law: EPA, OSHA, SARA, RCRA and CERCLA" Acronyms for regulatory agencies and laws that can significantly impact a science program.                   Violating the regulations can cost your school in a big way.

11:30-12:30PM

LUNCH (Provided as part of the workshop cost)

12:30-1:30PM

"What to do with the Leftovers" Participants will be walked through hazardous materials recognition, proper recovery, labeling, handling, storage and disposal processes used in the Tyler Junior College Chemistry Program. Participants will also tour the stockroom and observe chemical storage and inventory methods.

1:30-2:30AM

"Chemical Hygiene Plans" Make sure you are meeting local requirements for regulatory agencies like the Texas Water Commission, City and Fire Department codes, and Emergency Response.

2:30-3:00

Discussion session over safety issues submitted by participants. Participants are  encouraged to reflect applications to their programs, problem solve and discuss possible safety collaborations. Discuss ways to have materials disposed of after collection.

3:00-3:30

Closing activity " Now what do I do with IT!". Workshop overview and evaluation.

Workshop cost includes all necessary hand-outs for the participants and lunch. Participants will receive a TJC Continuing Education completion of training certificate with the hours of training listed, TEEAC sticker for 6 hrs of training, and any certificates afforded them through collaboration with the Region Service Centers.

Participants are asked to register at least two weeks in advance to help with planning.

Attendance is limited to 20 so be sure to register early.

Registration will be through the Tyler Junior College Continuing Education Department. Please see the Registration Form.  Region VII Science Cooperative teachers should contact the Region VII Education Service Center.
