Workshop for IPC and Chemistry Teachers

PROGRAM

All lectures and hands-on laboratories will be held at the Genecov Science Building in Room G223. Each activity will include discussion about experiment applications. Teachers are encouraged to reflect on student applications including ways to enhance problem solving and critical thinking skills.          

8:30-9:00AM   Arrival, Registration and "Get Acquainted" Genecov Science Building Rm 223

9:00-9:30AM   Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention: Making it pay.

9:30-10:30AM  Syringe Technique for collecting gas.

Experiment Group: Examining Chemical properties of Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Carbon dioxide.    CHEM TEKS: 4B&C, 5A, 11C  IPC  TEKS: 8A,      

10:30-11:30AM  MICROSCALE LABORATORY

Microscale Titrations (Use of Microburets) The construction of the microburets to be used.       

  Choice of one experiment:  

Experiment "Acid Rain" Measuring acid rain effects using LabPro/CBL2 technology. IPC  TEKS: 2A-D, 9B&C  CHEM TEKS: 8B, 11C & 14D

Experiment: Acid-Base Titrations: Analysis of Commercial Vinegar   IPC  TEKS: 2A-D, 9B  CHEM TEKS: 8B, 11C, & 14A and C

Experiment: "Differences in antacids"   CHEM TEKS: 8B, 11C & 14A-C

11:30AM-12:30pm  LUNCH

12:30-1:30       Experiment: " Lead Storage Batteries" A LabPro/CBL2 technology study into the components of a battery.  IPC TEKS 9B  CHEM TEKS: 5B, 10A&B

1:30-2:30PM    Experiment: "Developing Solubility Rules using Double Displacement Reactions"  CHEM TEKS  11B, 12B  or participants may choose to do... Experiment: "Investigating Solubility Factors"  IPC TEKS 9B  CHEM TEKS 13A

2:30-3:15PM     Experiment: " Factors That Effect the Rate of Dissolving" IPC TEKS 9E   or

Experiment: "Experiment 22: The oxidation of Iodide Ion With Hydrogen Peroxide" from Experiments in General Chemistry by J. Wicks) CHEM TEKS 13C and 15B

3:15-3:30PM    Clean up and workshop evaluation.

Cost includes all necessary supplies for the participants, a personal copy of the laboratory experiments performed with teacher instructions.  Teachers from a ESC Region VII Collaborative schools should contact Nita Beth Camp at the Region VII Education Service Center to have fee paid by Eisenhower Collaborative schools should contact Nita Beth Camp at the Region VII Education Service Center to have fee paid by Region VII.

Participants will receive a TJC Continuing Education completion of training certificate with the hours of training listed, TEEAC sticker for 6 hrs of training, and any certificates afforded them through collaboration with the Region Service Centers.

          Lunch will be provided.

          Participants are requested to register at least two weeks in advance to help with planning.

          Attendance is limited to 20 so be sure to register early.

Registration will be through the Tyler Junior College Continuing Education Department. Please see the registration form. Those from ESC VII collaborative schools should register through those service centers.
