"Microscale Chemistry for Biology"

July 9, 2004

SCIT2002 403034Q

PROGRAM

This workshop will emphasize biology laboratories which utilize chemical principles. The workshop presenter will be Don Allen, from WARD SCIENTIFIC. This workshop is targeted for biology teachers that would like to integrate more chemistry into their laboratory experiments. The experiments will be presented at a College General Biology/High School Biology level to teach use of the equipment. The techniques and equipment is safe enough for use in middle school applications and yet sophisticated enough for higher level college courses.

All lectures and hands-on laboratories will be held at the Genecov Science Building in Room G223.

Don Allen likes to bring a few "new" products each year therefore some experiments may be exchanged for those listed below.

Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:

  1. Understand the importance of laboratory safety and waste reduction in today's society.
  2. Be able to set up and operate a gel electrophoresis apparatus.
  3. Be able to discuss the basic concepts of gel electrophoresis.
  4. Be able to demonstrate how antacids work in the body.
  5. Be able to discuss the relationship of cell size and diffusion.
  6. Be able to explain ways in which chemistry and biology are integrated in body systems and functions.
  7. Be familiar with a variety of classroom technology applications.
  8. Have developed the skill and printed resource materials to apply objectives 1-7 in the laboratory.

8:30-9:00AM

Arrival, Registration and "Get Acquainted" Genecov Science Building Rm 223.  Participants will have an opportunity to examine samples of different laboratory manuals and equipment that are available through WARD SCIENTIFIC.
